Your body is the ground metaphor of your life, the expression of your existence… So many of us are not in our bodies, really at home and vibrantly present there. Nor are we in touch with the basic rhythms that constitute our bodily life. We live outside ourselves – in our heads, our memories, our longings – absentee landlords of our own estate. My way back into life was dance. I reentered my body by learning to move my self, to dance my own dance from the inside out, not the outside in.
~ Gabrielle Roth
Created by Gabrielle Roth and practiced by tens of thousands worldwide, 5Rhythms® is a philosophy, perspective, performance art and a dynamic movement practice rooted in the principle that if you put the psyche in motion it will heal itself. Movement is both the medicine and the metaphor, reaching across all languages, cultures and age groups to transform suffering into art, art into awareness, and awareness into action. Wherever the 5Rhythms are practiced, a community is born to dance, to sweat, to change, to support, and to provide a safe space for each of us to shatter the ego’s hold and awaken the juicy, unpredictable, fascinating, edge-walking, rock star part of ourselves that yearns to be free.
The 5Rhythms – Flowing Staccato Chaos Lyrical Stillness® – are states of Being. They are a map to everywhere we want to go, on all planes of consciousness – inner and outer, forward and back, physical, emotional and intellectual.
Flowing: Curving, continuous, spiraling, and soft movements. Grounded in the feet and focused on the in-breath. Receptive, soft. Internally-focused. Freeing the body.
Staccato: Percussive, angular movements with clear stops and starts, clear endings and beginnings. Focused on the out breath. Active. Rooted in the hips. Extending and meeting the world from center.
Chaos: Rag doll, released, relaxed, unpredictable movements. The dance when flowing and staccato meet. Open lungs, balanced breaths. Letting go of control without being out of control. Shaking off what needs to be left behind. Releasing the head to follow the body. Emptying the mind.
Lyrical: Light, weightless, expansive movements. Letting go of effort. Repetitions that arise and fade away. Your hands are the wings of your heart, leading your feet through the space. Awakening the soul.
Stillness: Breath-guided movement, expanding on the inhale, contracting on the exhale. Moving the spaces between. Full-body engagement. Embodying the spirit.
These are markers on the way back to a real self, a vulnerable, wild passionate, instinctive self.
Creativity. Connection. Community.
